EV-CHARGING 101

Everything you need to know about electric vehicle charging.

What is EV Charging?
The process of supplying electricity to recharge an electric vehicle's battery. Unlike gas cars, EVs can be charged at home, work, or public stations.
Types of Electric Vehicles
BEVs run entirely on electricity. PHEVs have both electric and gas engines. HEVs combine gas with electric but cannot be plugged in.
Charging Levels
Level 1: 3-5 mi/hr (120V). Level 2: 25-30 mi/hr (240V). DC Fast: 100+ mi/30min. Level 2 is most common for home and commercial.
Permits & Charging Connectors
J1772 is standard Level 2 in North America. CCS adds DC fast charging. CHAdeMO used by Nissan. Tesla uses proprietary connector.
charging Costs
Home charging: $0.10-0.15/kWh ($5-15 full charge). Public varies: $0.25-0.50/kWh. EVs save 50-70% on fuel vs. gas.
Battery & Range
Modern EVs: 100-400+ miles per charge. Battery capacity in kWh. Range affected by temperature, speed, and climate control.
